    Program Description


    The Personal Support Worker (PSW) program prepares graduates to provide supportive care to individuals across the lifespan including clients experiencing cognitive impairment, physical disability and mental health challenges, by assisting them with their activities of daily living. Graduates may find entry-level employment in a variety of care settings including community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and hospitals. The Personal Support Worker program will provide opportunities for experiential learning through the hands-on skills lab and 2 field placements (facility and community).

    Practicum Placement
    You’ll have the opportunity to work with patients/clients/residents with the programs 310-hour placement. Your practicum gives you valuable on-the-job experience and the opportunity to put theories learned in class to practical use. Students typically have one placement at a facility setting and one placement at a community agency which provides services to patients.

  • Admission Requirements


    College Eligibility

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent;
    • Mature student status (18 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by Wonderlic Academic Online Exam.

    Prior to Placement
    • Min mark of 60% in theory and practical application of theory
    • Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR Certification
    • Negative Police Check, including vulnerable sector
    • Medical form from a Canadian licenced physician stating fitness to complete the practicum and absence of communicable diseases.

    Healthcare & Applied Legislation – 15 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn about the personal support worker role in community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and/or hospital care settings in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer’s job description, policies, procedures and guidelines.

    Personal Support Worker Foundations – 25 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn the steps to act responsibly and be accountable for own actions while recognizing the boundaries of knowledge and skills within the personal support worker role that require collaboration with the client, family, supervisor and/or other members of the interprofessional care/service team.

    Collaborative Relationships – Interprofessional Team – 25 Hours
    In this module students, will learn their role as a member of the interprofessional care/service team* to maintain collaborative working relationships in the provision of supportive care* within community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and/or hospital care settings.

    Health Promotion Strategies – 25 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn about client-centred* and client-directed* care that is based on ethical* principles, sensitive to diverse client and family values, beliefs and needs, and which follows the direction of the plan of care/service plan.

    Interpersonal Communications – 35 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn about helping relationships* with clients and their families reflecting open communication, professional* boundaries, employer’s policies and adhering to confidentiality and privacy legislation.

    Basic Assessment Techniques – 35 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn how to identify relevant client information using basic assessment and communication skills and report and document findings in accordance with the requirements of employer policies and procedures and all applicable legislation.

    Environmental Safety – 25 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn how to promote and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for clients, their families, self and others including the implementation of infection prevention and control measures and emergency first aid procedures that are in keeping with the plan of care/service plan*, employer policies and procedures, and all applicable legislation.

    Human Development & Support – 55 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn about clients across the lifespan with routine activities of daily living* by applying basic knowledge of growth and development, common alterations in functioning, disease prevention, health promotion and maintenance, rehabilitation and restorative care.

    Assisting with Medications – 20 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn the process of assisting clients with medication* in keeping with the direction of the plan of care/service plan* and under the direction and monitoring of a regulated health professional*or most accountable person* and in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer’s policies.

    Household Management – 25 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn the requirements of assisting with household management tasks* and instrumental activities of daily living* in accordance with the plan of care/service plan* and considering the preferences, comfort and safety of clients, families and significant others.

    Family & Client Care Fundaments – 30 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn how to assist clients who are caring for dependent individuals* considering client and family choices, professional* boundaries and the direction of the plan of care/service plan.

    Elder Abuse – 15 Hours
    In this subject, students will learn the tactics to identify and report situations of neglect, and potential, alleged or witnessed/actual incidents of abuse, and respond in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer’s policies and procedures. End of Life Care Strategies – 30 Hours In this subject, students will learn about the provision of culturally relevant* palliative and end-of-life care* to clients experiencing life threatening illness and to their families and significant others, from diagnosis through death and bereavement, and in accordance with clients’ choices and the plan of care/service plan.

    Cognitive & Mental Health with GPA Online Course – 30 Hours
    In this subject, students will identify approaches and best practices to support positive and safe behaviour in clients experiencing cognitive impairment, mental health challenges and/or responsive behaviours.

    Clinical Placement (Community) – 110 Hours
    In this clinical placement (community), students will have the opportunity further their knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom in a variety of community settings.

    Clinical Placement (Facility) – 200 Hours
    In this clinical placement (facility), students will have the practice their knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom is a supervised facility setting.
