COURSE OVERVIEW
In this subject, students will be provided with an overview of trauma response and treatment. Students will explore the assessment and treatment of various forms of posttraumatic distress disorder and interventions that stress a nonpatholgizing, growth-oriented and hopeful view of recovery from trauma.

Interacting with substance use clients to identify and consider the impact that overwhelmingly negative events have on functioning and the ability to cope, and then developing and delivering interventions that emphasize safety, choice and personal control.
Explains trauma and its prevalence, how it often manifests, and its causes, including:
- Physical, emotional and sexual abuse
- The multi-generational impacts of residential schools
- Accidents and natural disasters
Responds to the unique needs of each trauma survivor, thus creating therapeutic rapport
Explains the potential for re-traumatization and how it can be avoided or reduced, providing examples on a case-by-case basis
Facilitates appropriate interventions and treatment plans as supported by supervisor
