    Program Description


    This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of postsecondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

    • Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
    • Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
    • Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
    • Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
    • Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.

    Learning Outcomes


    Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

    1. Develop communication skills to a level required by business and industry.
    2. Use critical thinking and problem-solving techniques.
    3. Develop a general knowledge of a variety of subjects that will contribute to developing insights into self and society.

    Upon graduation, students may find employment in all occupations requiring a general education or with firms/agencies that provide their own training. A wide variety of entry-level positions exist in all economic sectors, such as business, finance, retail and sales, hospitality, arts, culture, recreation and sports. Many graduates of this program continue their studies in other college or university programs.

  • Course Descriptions


    Semester 1
    Basic Study Skills
    This course will enable students to assess their current study skills and plan for improvement. Students will practice time-management techniques for successful studying. Students will learn to develop powerful reading skills and practice memory techniques to enhance ability to learn and improve test performance. This course will also help students to develop specific study skills for mathematics and related subjects and implement an action plan to improve them.

    Computer Foundations
    Students will use Microsoft Office to create reports, electronic presentations, brochures, flyers, posters, and in creating budget models. They research content and imagery using an Internet browser and learn effective electronic filing.

    College Reading & Writing Skills
    This course focuses on the reading, writing and critical thinking skills needed for academic and workplace success. Students will analyse, summarize, and discuss a variety of readings and apply the steps of planning, writing, and revising in response to written prompts. This course prepares students for post-secondary writing tasks, research, and documentation.

    Professional Writing Skills for Business
    Students learn the professional writing skills required for effective communication in business. Students apply their learning to business case studies to produce documents for various purposes and audiences using a range of current business formats. They will also learn to write proposals and reports using research and documentation skills to further prepare them for higher learning and career success.

    Student Success for Higher Learning
    This course enables students to develop skills that will enhance their success in college. Students will identify their unique learning styles and develop strategies for success in their academic and personal lives.

    Semester 2
    Essential Mathematics
    This course will provide the student with learning tools that will help them to improve basic arithmetic skills and to develop reasoning and problem solving skills. It is designed for students to help them bridge any existing gap between their current preparation and college level math. Topics include: fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, percent, metric system and an introduction to algebra and trigonometry.

    Introduction to Human Relations
    This course provides students with an introduction to human relations, focusing on self-development and interpersonal effectiveness. Students will develop various interpersonal skills by examining theories relevant to those skills. The following topics constitute the specific areas of study in the course: developing self-awareness, building and maintaining relationships, communicating with others, coping with stress, managing one’s feelings, and resolving interpersonal conflicts.

    Introduction to Social Sciences
    This course will teach the basic principles and vocabulary of the social science disciplines: economics, sociology, and politics. It will introduce students to the intellectual frameworks of these disciplines and will emphasize the development of critical thinking by focusing on inequalities in contemporary Canadian society. Students will be provided with an understanding of the meaning of freedoms, rights, and participation in community and public life, in addition to a working knowledge of the structure and function of various levels of governments in Canada. The course will contribute to the development of citizens who are conscious of the diversity, complexity, and richness of the human experience, who are able to establish meaning through this consciousness, and, who, as a result, are able to contribute thoughtfully, creatively, and positively to the society in which they live and work.

    Biological Sciences
    This course will explore various sub-disciplines of biology including cell biology, Genetics, Classification and Evolution, Diseases and Immunity, and Ecology. Students will learn basic concepts in these areas, while continuing to develop critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills. Practical laboratory and field exercises will reinforce the lecture material.

    Semester 3
    World Geography
    This course examines the world in relation to the physical world and gives an insight into the causes and effects of the climatic patterns and how they affect us. Climates, weather, topography and countries will be introduced on a global as well as on a case basis. Acquired skills will include: map interpretation, scales, analysis of patterns and researching by means of an atlas. This course introduces the world we live in by a basic understanding of global patterns which will then be applied to in- depth study of specific areas.

    Psychology: Basic Processes of Behaviour
    Psychology is the study of behaviour – that of humans and other creatures. This one-semester course is about the basic concepts of psychological research methods, learning, memory, perception, states of consciousness, motivation, and emotion.

    Essentials of Canadian History
    This course is a study of some of the major themes of Canadian history from Confederation to the present. It is designed to increase the student’s understanding of how our past influences and engages with the present, and how we are shaping our future.

    Introduction to Physical Sciences
    This course will explore areas of physics, chemistry, astronomy and earth science with a major emphasis on the first two. It introduces basic concepts and key ideas while providing opportunities for students to learn analytical reasoning skills and a new way of thinking about their environment.
