    Program Description


    This program is offered to Aboriginal men, youth and women who require assistance entering and/or re-entering the work force. Our Job Readiness Skills program encourages and supports participants to increase their skill level in the following areas: personal life management skills, employment skills, personal finance management and communication skills. This course prepares students for entry-level jobs by providing them with practical knowledge and safe work habits to succeed in the work force.

    Students have a total of sixteen (16) weeks to complete their program requirements, starting from the date of their first course.

    Learning Outcomes


    The objectives of this 16-week curriculum are to:

    1. Provide jobseekers with the necessary pre-employment skills;
    2. Empower individuals for success; and
    3. Promote job retention and advancement

    College Eligibility

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; OR
    • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate; OR
    • General Educational Development (GED); OR
    • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program).

  • Course Descriptions


    Semester 1
    Personal Financial Management
    This course will discuss the significance of money management and budgeting on personal and professional success. The course will identify debt management resources and evaluate alternatives for financing education through student loans, financial aid, and other resources. The course will also identify methods to protect yourself from identify theft.

    Time and Stress Management and Organization Skills
    This course will enable students to recognize how stress affects performance and will examine the types, causes, and methods of dealing with stress. The course will identify methods for utilizing time management tools to improve personal productivity. Students will learn to apply organizational techniques to academic and workplace success.

    Professional Etiquette
    This course will introduce the elements of professional attire and emphasize the importance of making a positive first impression. Students will develop an understanding of workplace etiquette. The course will identify the importance of making and keeping appointments and describe impact attire can have on an employer’s perception of them. Students will learn to demonstrate appropriate behavior in work-related social situations.

    Ethics and Diversity
    This course will summarize how ethics influence personal and professional behavior. Students will discuss the importance of maintaining confidentiality and learn to apply ethical decision making while responding to unethical behavior. The course will classify the various forms of workplace authority and its appropriate use. Students will review the various elements of workplace diversity and its influence on performance. The course will explore basic employee rights and legal protections available for workplace diversity issues.

    Accountability and Workplace Relationships
    This course discusses the concepts of accountability and workplace relationships. The course outlines strategies for maintaining appropriate, successful workplace relationships. The course will identify appropriate and inappropriate relationships with co-workers, vendors and customers. The course will also define basic guidelines regarding work-related social functions, situations, and relationships.

    Communication
    This course will outline communication processes and the impact effective communication has on workplace and career success. Students will review communications media and their appropriate uses. The course will describe the primary methods of nonverbal communication and identify the appropriate written communication to use in various workplace settings. The course will outline the purpose and process of effective documentation and describe the elements of effective presentations.

    Electronic Communications
    This course will outline the professional use of electronic communication tools and enable students to utilize effective communications etiquette. Students will discuss proper use of portable devices and texting. The course will enable students to apply professionalism to social media tools and identify proper behaviors in video and teleconferences.

    Motivation, Leadership, and Team Building
    This course defines motivation and describes common motivational factors. The course reviews primary leadership styles and key qualities of a successful leader. The course will examine the difference between leadership and management and describe the elements of effective teams, and how they impact performance. The course will identify characteristics of effective team players and describe strategies for dealing with difficult team members. The course will also outline and describe the elements of a successful meeting.

    Conflict and Negotiation
    This course will define conflict and provide students with strategies to respond to conflict at work. The course will examine various conflict management styles and their appropriate applications. Students will review negotiation processes and discuss negotiation techniques. The course will describe harassment and workplace bullying and provide an overview of employee rights in the workplace. The course will enable students to resolve conflict in a professional manner using proactive to prevent workplace violence.

    Job Search Skills
    This course will enable students to conduct a job search in a targeted career, industry, and location. The course will identify references to be used in a job search and enable students to discover sources for job leads. The course will review networking as a job search tool and describe appropriate behaviors to use during the job search process. The course will also summarize the importance of maintaining the right attitude during a job search.

    Preparing a Resume and Cover Letter
    This course will enable students to communicate a clear career objective/personal profile using power words and quantifiable outcomes to reflect personal accomplishments and experiences. The course will describe methods for effectively sharing a resume and outline how to effectively develop a cover letter. Students will review methods to tailor the resume package for target industries and employers. The course also addresses special circumstances and time gaps.

    Interview Techniques
    This course will describe implementing pre-interview strategies and activities for career success. Students will learn to conduct company and job specific research for interview preparation. Students will review strategies for practicing interview techniques and discuss appropriate responses to common interview questions. The course will outline appropriate behavior during a face-to-face and technology based interviews. The course will describe common interview methods and types of interview questions. Students will examine key areas of employee rights and learn strategies to respond to discriminatory questions. Students will learn to formulate appropriate responses to special circumstances and tough questions and prepare for post interview activities including salary negotiation, employment screenings, tests, and medical exams.
